How to clear snow from your car shelter without damaging the cover

Your shelter saves you from brushing snow off the car every morning. The snow sitting on its roof still needs attention. Clear it from outside, keep up with accumulation and never push up on the cover from underneath. Those habits help protect both the shelter and what’s parked inside.

Don’t wait until the roof looks overloaded

It’s tempting to leave one more snowfall until the weekend. But snow and ice can build up enough to cause a collapse. Promutuel recommends clearing accumulation as it develops.

There is no single snow-depth limit for every shelter. Check your model’s manual and watch the roof after precipitation. A steeper slope may help snow slide off, but it does not eliminate maintenance.

Use the right tool from outside

Choose a brush or roof-clearing tool suitable for a fabric cover, following the manual. Work from outside, with your feet on the ground and enough reach. Never climb onto the shelter.

Pushing the cover from inside can look like a quick fix. Resist that shortcut. Promutuel warns that pushing from underneath can tear the cover or cause a collapse.

Keep the load balanced on a two-sided roof

Remove small amounts, alternating between sides. Clearing one side completely while the other remains loaded can destabilize the frame. L’Unique recommends working progressively to avoid that imbalance.

A single-slope shelter has a different roof layout, so follow the method specified for that model. Snow is directed toward one side, but accumulation still needs monitoring. Allow room for falling snow and keep people out of that area.

Watch the snow coming off the house, too

If someone is clearing your home’s roof, point out the shelter before work starts. CAA-Québec advises against dumping that snow onto it. Your shelter should never become the landing spot for snow removed from the house.

Is the cover sagging or the frame visibly bent?

Don’t walk underneath to inspect it or retrieve your car. Keep people away and have a professional assess the situation. If clearing the roof would put you at risk, leave the job to a qualified person.
